Roadways are recognized for their notable scenic, historic, cultural, natural, recreational, and archaeological qualities. Communities can also apply for designation as state byway status, specifics of the state programs and sponsoring organizations and communities vary across the U.S.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Scenic America<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, of which Scenic Michigan is an affiliate,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">led the efforts to revitalize and restore federal funding for the&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">National Scenic Byways P<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">rogram.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;2021<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">additions&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">are the first&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to the&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">program since 2009<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Scenic Michigan Board of Director<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;member David Betts underscores the importance of&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">program.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cByways are&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">beautiful&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">but&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">vulnerable&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">places in Michigan<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;and across the country<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. R<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">estoring&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">federal&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">funding&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">stream&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">was long overdue, especially for rural scenic byways where resources are limited.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We are eager to continue collaboration with the state&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and other partners&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to leverage federal funding on behalf of our communities<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Restoration of this program bring<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;exciting o<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">pportunities to&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">secure national recognition&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and resources&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">for&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">existing Michigan-designated byways<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u201d<\/span><span America\u2019s Scenic Byways Act of 2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">was signed into&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">law<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;in September 2019, restarting the application process for new federal byways designations, and marking a new&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">era&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">for current and prospective byways.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Scenic<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;Michigan and Scenic<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;America will continue to advocate for<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;the program\u2019s&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">long-term funding,&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">FHWA&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">consideration of applications on a rolling basis, a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">nd<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;inc<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">lusion<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;in the Surface Transportation Reauthorization bill that Congress will take up this session<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">FHWA&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">spokesperson told Scenic&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Michigan&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">this week&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that grant opportunities&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">for existing byways programs&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">training for state coordinators&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">are still in the works and will be announced in future months.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Local communities across the country will benefit from the revival of the National Scenic Byways Program.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Natio<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">nal recognition helps draw<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">visitors<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, jobs and other benefits to communities along&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">our&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">scenic roads.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt\u2019s exciting to think about how more American cities and towns will be able to leverage the scenic roadways<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d said&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mark&nbsp;<\/span><span of the National Scenic Byways Program on America\u2019s travel and tourism industry and our own scenic conservation mission, Scenic America took the lead working with Congress to open a new nominations process and&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">re-<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">establish funding for the program.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We are grateful to Rep. David&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Cicilline<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;(D-RI), Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME), Rep. Garret Graves (R-LA), Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD), and the nine Members who led the way to pass Public Law No. 116-57, The Reviving America\u2019s Scenic Byways Act, making&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(this)&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">announcement possible,\u201d said Scenic America President Mark Falzone.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Congress included $16 million in funding for the program in the 2021 Consolidated Appropriations Act enacted on December 29, 2020 \u2014 its first dedicated funding since 2012.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n announcement of the 2021&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">program additions,&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">FHWA Executive Director Tom Everett<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">oted,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;Through their many unique qualities, each of these new&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(49)&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">additions to the National Scenic Byways&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">P<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">rogram helps America\u2019s roads tell our national story<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">These special routes offer travelers exciting new opportunities to explore the nation, from coast to coast or close to home.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Scenic roads have always been popular with travelers<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and support a wide array of area businesses too. Whether hotels, eateries or gas stations, Scenic Byways and All-American Roads support the nation\u2019s small business community and are economic drivers for entire regions.\u201d<\/span><span devastating&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">personal losses<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">impacts of COVID-19 on o<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ur&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">robust hospitality industry<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;and on the state economy overall.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Tourism is one of Michigan\u2019s leading industries<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;the state&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">attrac<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ts<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;widespread resident and visitor travel.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Michigan is home t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">o 23<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Byways, including 3 National Scenic Byways and 20 State Byways<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;&#8212; our byways contribute to overall tourism.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ccording to&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">data compiled by Tourism Economics for the&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Michigan Tourism Office, Department of Community and Economic Development, in 2019&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Michigan e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">mployment supported by visitor activity rose to 351,100<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;jobs<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, 6.1% of all employment in the state.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Employment directly supported by visitor spending increased by 22,000 jobs&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">between&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">2015<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;and 2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In 2019,&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">125.6 million visitors spent $26.3 billion in Michigan.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;Visitors generated $2.9 billion in state and local<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">taxes,&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">which is equivalent to $735 in tax savings for every household in Michigan.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The National Park Service estimates that in 2018, 2.7 million park visitors&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in Michigan&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">spent a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">bout&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">$237 million in&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">scenic&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">gateway regions while visiting lands managed&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">here&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">by the National Park Services<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&nbsp;<\/span><span
